Week 3

There were many differences that I noticed in both of these blogs particularly the change in performance and camara setting. In the second video it was all males and in the other one it was co-ed. This type of setting is real cultural because they do not let woman perform with men in certain types of dance I assume. Or traditionally it has always been done by males so in order to follow tradition they keep the same customs. From what we read in the course reader I take it that the one that is with all males is Bali and the first one was Javalan because it was slower. In the second video there are many more music players that in the first video. They also seem to be all wearing white which may stand for a form of renewal or cleansening I am guessing. The second one seems to be extremely more up beat. Both of the videos howevever, the instrumentalists are sitting on the floor. For the first one however, there are females dancing to the slow music which seems to be ironic because they are dancing really slow when I feel as if coming from a Latin American background they should be dancing to the more up beat sound. There also seems to have a focus in the first one because the female dancers are the center of attention. Where as in the second one when there are only males it seems as if it is just some random person video taping and is doing it from the side and is not really trying to focus on one certain thing.

Good comments on the gender differences. What about the context of both performances? The culture is Java, not Javalan. Where is your 4th week post?
